Simple Success Factors

To Know...

If someone “Knows” you, it Simply means they know who you are on a personal basis. Not a best friend; maybe not as a friend at all, but if they were to see your face they would be able to come up with a name. Or, in today’s virtual world, see your name in their email inbox or on their Facebook page and say “yes, I know that person.” What it doesn’t mean is that someone recognizes your name or your face just from your personal marketing.

To Like...

If someone Likes you, it Simply means that he or she smiles when they think about you. We might even go so far as to say that we can define Liking as an absence of “DISLiking;” that is, when someone who Knows you hears your name they don’t have a negative reaction! Of course, we should strive for more than that; to inspire the people who Know us to have more than just a neutral reaction when they think about us or hear from us – something more along the lines of “Wow, my day is a little brighter now!”

To Trust...

Well, if someone Knows me and Likes me, of COURSE they Trust me, right? Unfortunately, no. Believe or not, it is possible to Know and Like someone and not fully Trust them! But we aren’t talking about a lack of trust in the integrity or ethics department because if someone doesn’t think you’re an honorable sort of guy or gal, they probably don’t Like you much either. What we mean by Trust is that the people who Know you and Like you Trust that you’ll do a great job for them and their referred business. That if they refer you to their friends, you won’t embarrass them. They Trust you to make them pleased with and proud of their recommendation.

To CARE About

This is where many eager entrepreneurs blow it. They try to tell their potential customers all about what they do before their potential customers care to hear about what they do! They jump right from “Hi, how ya’ doin’? My name is Joe” to “Do you know anyone looking for a <insert Joe’s job description>?”

Patience, grasshopper. You just can’t rush the Care About!

“I’m a Writer!”

If you’ve never heard my schtick on why this is such an important phrase to me, check out my blog on Elevator Speeches here. Basically, it says that if you’re excited about what you do… if you’re proud of what you do… if you’re good at what you do, you don’t need a fancy elevator speech. Your enthusiasm and self-confidence will create an aura around you that’s magnetic to everyone you meet!

So, yes, I’m a writer and I do a little speaking and consulting from time to time. I started writing professionally in 2006, when I finally finished “that book” I’d started back in, oh, probably 2003. “That book” was released in early 2007 with the title: Sell with Soul: The New Agent’s Guide to an Extraordinary Career in Real Estate. I never really thought anyone would actually buy it, so I confess that I didn’t put much effort into the design or marketing. But oops! I was wrong! People DID buy it, and DID like it, so I immediately went to work on the much higher-quality 2nd edition which was released in 2008 with a new subtitle – Sell with Soul: Creating an Extraordinary Career in Real Estate without Losing Your Friends, Your Principles or Your Self-Respect.

My next book: If You’re Not Having Fun Selling Real Estate, You’re Not Doing it Right came out in early 2010, and is a sequel, of sorts, to Sell with Soul. I followed that up with Prospect with SOUL for Real Estate Agents which was released in mid-2011 and in late 2013 I released a two-volume blog-to-book set called Selling Real Estate without Selling Your SoulAnd of course, as I write this, I’m putting the final touches on my first non-real estate-related book – It Really IS That Simple. All of my books can be found at the Sell With Soul Store (just in case you are interested :-) )

What Else I’m Up To These Days

I divide my time these days between writing and rescuing shelter dogs. I’ve become quite the proficient rescuer (if I do say so myself), helping my local county kill shelter become very close to no-kill in a part of the country where spaying and neutering are not, shall we say, widely accepted practices.

I am both humbled and exhilarated every day by the goodness and generosity of the rescue community – what an amazing group of crazy men and (mostly) women dedicated to saving lives! I’m honored to be a part of it. I’ve even created my own little rescue, called… get this… Saving with Soul! (www.SavingwithSoul.com is my rescue Facebook page.) And who knows…there might just be a book about my adventures in dog rescue coming soon :-). If you are a fellow rescuer (or would like to be), please connect with me over on Facebook!
